Upgrade to Windows 11 sooner rather than later: W10 end of support 14.10.2025

Old games that are largely forgotten. I definitely don't want to use something that will send a kernel panic at the drop of a hat anymore. I've dealt with more than enough blue screens and even stack overflows in days yonder—although a stack overflow was at the application level, and only that...

    The Trump thread

So all you guys want to do is squawk endlessly on "orange man bad" and are trying to corner with this notion that this current president lies more frequently than past presidents. Which president lies more: Bush, Obama, Biden, or Trump? Trick question; they all lie so often that it's nearly...

Upgrade to Windows 11 sooner rather than later: W10 end of support 14.10.2025

You use flash drives? I used FTP to directly send files from my main running Windows 10 to a 20 year old system running Windows 98 via ethernet cable (I think it was cat5, not even cat5e).

    The Climate Change Thread

A recent discovery throws a spanner into the narrative that the Antarctic is losing ice. I stfill haven't made up my mind on whether this is good or bad, but is a good reminder that we are still in an ice age...

4chan hacked to oblivion, could it be over?

A single file script multiple thousand lines long is usually the sign of an old fashioned C developer from the old days when there was no concern for technical debt. Even recent versions of Simple Machines Forum (SMF) have multiple huge (1k+ loc) functions. Fortunately, lots of comments.

Perhaps a more fitting comparison might be a toll booth on a bridge or highway. Up-front, per-use charge Every car that wants to cross pays a fixed fee at the booth. This isn’t optional for drivers who need to use that route—just like importers (and ultimately consumers) can’t avoid a tariff...

The official NerdZoner's weather zone! How's your weather today?

This May closely resembles last May where the first week is cool and rainy. Then off to triple digit heat as per usual.

    The Trump thread

Trump lies a lot and always has—just like every other politician. This includes the front-runners on the other side. The only difference with Trump versus other presidents in my lifetime is that he’s actually executing on his campaign promises—a rare thing. The main reason for my vote was the...

    The Trump thread

The frustrating aspect for me about the messaging on the tariffs is: why so coy? Why say — or "let it slip" — that there will be short-term pain, only to later deny having said that? Why oppose Amazon's plan to show the tariff similar to a sales tax? I see this as honesty and transparency, not...

The official NerdZoner's weather zone! How's your weather today?

Just had a big thunderstorm roll through. Even though it was a bog standard low pressure system, it apparently fooled some into thinking that maybe the monsoon season started... in May... when it is still at least six weeks out. Feels great to be able to open the window and my room...

    Google loses data

Ha! I am not considered "Family IT Technomage"; that misfortune is on my younger brother, who has moved out three years ago. They never did get that chip back; it probably died on its own and the update was a red herring: not even the bios can find it.

How Do I Eject My USB Drive if the “Device Is Currently in Use”?

I ended up not using the "safely remove" function because the device was "busy" 70% of the time, and back in the day when I'd copy files to and from flash drives multiple times a day, this was enough to make me ignore it and just yank the drive. I got catastrophic data loss once where a...
