The Fantastic Facts project is taking place because this year marks the 200th anniversary of the modern railway.

Mike Parker-Bray, from the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership, said the stories range from "the circus and all the elephants being taken down to Newquay" to "how guano, the fancy word for bird poo, was a big traffic in Topsham".

Oh, and in addition this article, about the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR). Until now I only knew about Darlington because of the stadium that was way too big for Darlington FC. Perhaps that would also make an interesting thread some day, it's quite a story.

It would be incorrect to call it the first railway in the world, but the 26-mile long line between Witton Park in County Durham and the River Tees port town of Stockton was the first to use many features which would become standard around the globe.

Niall Hammond, chairman of the S&DR Friends Group, said it was the "railway that got the world on track".

How is Stockton Darlington railway's 200th year being marked?

Many events are planned for the S&DR bicentenary, including a recreation of its maiden journey.
