No, they're not quite as keen as that lol. It wouldn't bother me though.

It's the 31st of December. Tonight The Netherlands will turn into a war zone. If you happen to be in the country of tulips and stroopwafels, better be prepared. Here's a guide of how to survive Dutch New Year's Eve.

One note I must mention: this video is 7 years old (2018). Back then about 68 million euros of fireworks was sold, legally. This does not include the illegal fireworks many are getting from Belgium and Germany. This year will be the final year that fireworks can be sold and ignited legally. After that there will be a full fireworks ban, mostly because of all the yearly madness. 129 million euros have been spent now. Compare that with the sales numbers of 2018. I expect a lot of havoc and chaos.

Here's a snippet of a news article:

This year, a record amount of fireworks has been sold in the Netherlands. According to the Pyrotechnics Trade Association, around 129 million euros’ worth was sold over the counter. This breaks last year’s record of 118 million euros.
It is the last new year's eve in which fireworks may still set off.

So will this really be the last time? Knowing my fellow countrymen: hell no. If you tell a Dutch person that they can't do something, they'll double down on ya. This all will result in even more people just getting their fireworks in Belgium and Germany, which are more unregulated fireworks markets. In other words, the ban will not have the desired effect, and may even have worse outcomes in some ways.

Having read this, I just want to emphasize to you Britishes how insane the Dutch spending on fireworks is. A few things to put in perspective:
  • Population: UK 69 million vs The Netherlands 18 million
  • Money spent on fireworks: UK 30 to 40 million pound vs The Netherlands 129 million euro (112.5 million pound)
  • UK estimates include all expenditures, so including: consumer purchases, large scale public displays/organized shows, sponsorships, safety gear.
  • Dutch estimates are standard consumer purchases only. This does not include any organized shows. Also this does not include fireworks purchased from neighboring countries (Belgium and Germany), which is estimated another 20 to 25 million euro (17.5 to 21.8 million pound)
What Texas in America is for guns, is The Netherlands in Europe for fireworks.
