A lot of film is set in deserts these days - Borderlands, Dune, Furiosa, must be because of this thing. I dislike 4d design so the quicker this problem is resolved the better. It's even more prominent in indie game dev.

There isn't actually any, because we can't percieve the 4th dimension - Carl Sagan even explains it in that clip. Anything that purports to be 4d is lying, or just marketing. 4d objects can only be stored in computers as data, never actually rendered other than as a 3d shadow. Perhaps you're thinking of something else?
