The obsession with finding ever more efficient multiplication algorithms

We're all familiar with the high school method of multiplying numbers. However, that's not the most efficient algorithm. This video shows us the various efficiency improvements devised over the decades, with the latest one being much more efficient than that high school method. The catch? It's awfully complicated so only worth doing for numbers with thousands of digits. Sigh. On the plus side, the most efficient algorithm possible may have now been found.
