It's not just the lifting of the weight that builds muscle. According to BBC TV doctor Michael Mosley, lowering the weight and relaxing the muscle actually has an even bigger effect! Exercises that focus on this are called Eccentric Exercises and look very doable for non-fitness types. Check out the article and podcast below for full details.

Interesting method to building muscle. So many ways to train including slow reps, fast reps, low weight with high reps etc. I do favor using body weight for exercise too, like calisthenics.
