Politics, differences of opinions or is it just humanity changing.

We blame politics for divisions but is there more to this?

I recently posted a question on X relating to Gulf of Mexico changing to Gulf of America. Merely asked who is the authority for location naming.

Got a lot of sensible answers but as the thread expanded the difference between languages was mentioned, sarcasm of English was evident, a few insults then emerged. Use of grammar was criticised, the incorrect use of plural relative to singular was highlighted.

The sarcasm and insults were nothing to do with politics, nothing to do with left or right so maybe it is not politics that is causing division but just humanity going through this stage.

Those are just douchebags feeling empowered to be toxic by sitting behind their anonymous identities. Indeed it's prevalent, I hate it too and I make sure that it doesn't happen here. It's like they forget that behind every username is a real, genuine meatsack human being whom they (usually) wouldn't speak to like that face to face and seem to think it's ok to abuse.

The irony is that the MAGA faithful tried to argue that America has been around longer than Mexico. Yes, Mexico as a nation it has been.
But it was the Gulf of New Spain long before America was around. It was also known for the last 400 years as the Gulf of Mexico due to one of the "old" Indigenous cities it was associated with being near the coast. Of course, being Indigenous means brown skinned, and Trump can't deal with anything of that skin color being recognized with bespoilng our pristine shores.

And the funny thing is, if you live in the US, you see it as Gulf of America. Others see it on their maps in Google/Apple still called Gulf of Mexico... because 'Murica!

As for authority.. sorry, Trump doesn't have the authority to rename it for the rest of the world, even though he may wish it to be so. That requires international action through the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), which oversees the uniform charting and naming of the world’s seas, oceans, and navigable waters.

It's a wee bit like road rage, people in cars do thing they would never do in public. Recall once, was on my motorbike, been raining so I had all the gear on. BMW behind me flashed the headlights as I wasn't going fast enough for them. At the lights pulled up beside the BMW, middle aged bespectacled woman on her own. No way I was going to say anything as she was on her own. When she looked at me I got 'The Finger'

She didn't know me at all, in my gear she didn't know if young or old but she felt emboldened to give me the finger. Bet if I bumped in to her in Waitrose she'd be the first to apologise.

This was a post about responses to a question I posted, not sure why Trump was brought in to it.

Gulf of Mexico
Gulf of America

Is it really that hard to comprehend for anyone of simple intelligence?
Remember... who exactly wanted to force the rename?
And you can quickly dismiss any attempt at diversion.
YOU specifically asked a question about who had authority on renaming the Gulf of Mexico and was told who did as it pertained to the rest of the world. Now, did that possibly butt-hurt you when you were confronted with factual information? Yes.... and I don't really care if it did as I do not suffer fools. Sometimes those that appear to be fools need to be slapped back into reality.

If you have nothing polite to say say nothing. One can disagree without insults.

Been watching this thread unfold and daring to wade in here for a moment, I suspect that there might be some misunderstanding / cross purposes here leading to this unpleasant conversation.

Given the fact that Trump wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico for his own dodgy purposes, I can see why someone would wonder who actually is the authority for these things and hence asks. Heck, I was wondering that myself and merely asking about it isn't related to one's support or not of Trump and what he's trying to do. @Astro What you've answered Geffers's question that it's the IHO, whom I'd never heard of either btw, that's responsible, so I think the question's been answered. It's therefore not appropriate to have a go at his Trump leanings in this context. Now, we know Geffer's staunch support for Trump from the Trump thread and if he'd said here that he supports Trump attempting this, then criticising him for it would be appropriate, but not for just asking a neutral question about a hot button topic like this one.

AW, if you'd like to make your MAGA points about the Gulf of Mexico in the Trump thread, then please feel free.

I hope that's cleared this up and smoothed things over now so we can all move on with polite discussion about people taking a pop at other people for no reason on forums. This happens all too often as we all know and is the topic / subject of this thread, with the Gulf of Mexico question being merely an example of this happening.

@Geffers are you ok to link to your X post so that we can see the full context of your example and the kind of douchebag attacks that you've been getting? I'd like to stress that you're not obliged to if you'd rather not and it's for interest only given the context of this thread being about people taking a pop for no reason. Note that any member of the public seeing this thread will be able to link your X identity with this one if you do, which you might rather avoid.

Well, seeing as you usually defend the indefensible Trump/MAGA positions, the implications were that it was fine for Trump to do it. And he only has authority to rename it as far as the US use is concerned. The fact that it was an ego issue with him is readily apparently with is AP news confrontations, a news organization that is international and not US based/biased.

Seems like someone was trying to be snarky and got out-snarked.
You tried to imply that Trump was brought into it for no reason, yet you mention the VERY reason in your post.
Have you read the post that I just made? Perhaps we cross posted?

That's why I like NodeBB better. The posts immediately show up even if you are working on creating one. With PHP scripts there is that inherent delay until a page is refreshed.

So you can see a half written post that's not been posted yet? Not sure I like that.

Also, I've noticed that with this cloud version of XF, sometimes posts I make aren't actually visible to anyone but me for a few minutes. Never happened with the self hosted version and is a mystery to me as to why it happens. Bit annoying, really.

So, have you seen my reply now at post 8?

No, when it's submitted it immediately updates the thread in real time, you don't have to do a refresh to see the post or see a "new posts have been posted" notice pop up. That is one of the benefits of socket.io.

And yes, my reply was edited to reflect that past behavior reflects on posts.

I think this is the link, not great at X searches.
