Does a network cable "Y-splitter" actually work?

I'm talking about a passive device that simply connects all the wires in a network cable in parallel to two network sockets, like the ones sold on Amazon. Err, no, of course it not, but one can be made if it's built properly and one accepts certain compromises, but it's not worth it.
