Don't bother using DuckDuckGo for privacy

This was reported on back in May, but for anyone using DuckDuckGo's (what an awful name) mobile browser, it will intentionally leak data to Microsoft owned domains due to an agreement that it has with them. Funnily, they didn't reveal this until a researcher outed them, so they're not to be trusted any more than any other intrusive tech company. They're all at it and there's very little one can do to stop all tracking, only reduce it.

Edwards revealed earlier this week that DuckDuckGo’s mobile browser allows some Microsoft sites to bypass its tracker block. So, while the browser was blocking trackers from Facebook and Google, an exception was being made for Microsoft. Edwards also found that DuckDuckGo allows data to be sent to LinkedIn and Bing, both domains owned by Microsoft.

Sigh... another operation found to be leaking info to someone, somewhere. Hardly surprising though, I don't think genuine privacy ever exists for general internet users.

It’s almost like the ongoing corporates action of everything is actually a *bad* thing. Like, you know, something something capitalism bad. (I am waiting to get myself that on a t-shirt.)

@Arantor capitalism is the best system we have and I'm generally for it, but unfortunately it does tend to be exploitative so needs to be tempered with regulators. A dash of light socialism doesn't hurt either. Seriously though, not too much or it can be just as repressive.

Both: what gets me here is the sneaky way they went about it, hoping no one would notice. If they'd have been up front about it, I don't think anyone would have criticised them too much for it.

Buh-bye DDG! Now I have to make browser changes again. I was kind of holding out; it's that "one more thing to do" that's keeping me from just doing it. 🙃
