I think this is a great idea. USB-C is a great standard, not least because it can be plugged in either way and can deliver a lot of power. Naturally, Apple claims that it will stifle innovation, but I can't see how it would. Especially so as some of their iPads now use this connector instead of the Lightning one, which is really just a proprietary USB connector.

For smartphones I think we are already heading in this direction. Apple being the only odd one out but I predict when they next do a major iPhone redesign we will see them move to USB C (or no port at all with some kind of mag safe pad which keeps getting rumored).

There are still a huge amount of non phone devices that utilise micro USB so I don't think we will have that fully universal cable for some time but it's a step in the right direction.
