Hey, welcome to NerdZone, we're glad to have you! :)

How would y’all say this community compares to Discord and Reddit?

Now, those are interesting comparisons.

Discord

That's basically a realtime phone call with lots of users, not too different from a Zoom or Teams meeting, making it very ephemeral, which this type of forum is nothing like. It could potentially have a matching Discord channel though, but that's not something that I'm planning to do at the moment.

Reddit

That's a kind of forum, but run by some third party with deep pockets so members are beholden to them, even the so-called thread "admins" are nothing more than pawns in a big, faceless, corporate machine that cares nothing about its users, only monetizing them for profit. There's no text formatting in the posts and it doesn't lend itself to making proper, formatted long form posts like you can with this type of forum.

This forum

The forum software that drives NerdZone, XenForo, isn't realtime by design, so no pressure to say things in the moment, or reply to members right away. Take part when it suits you and put as much or as little thought into your posts as you want. You can also edit them afterwards if needed, up to a point. It works well on a smartphone or tablet, but there's limitations with that type of computer as it's only got a touchscreen for user input, so NerdZone really shines on a desktop PC with a proper mouse, keyboard and monitor.

Also, threads and posts are permanent in nature and posts have post numbers, meaning that there's no endless scroll and newsfeed where members make one post when it appears and can then never get back to it later. Here, we have a proper structure as you can see and subscription system making it easier to access resources, find content that interests you and have proper, extended conversations with other members if you like.

However, I think the biggest benefit of this type of forum is the sense of community that it fosters and helps members to connect and become genuine friends over time. Note that there's no scope for trolls / bullies or spammers to do their dirty work here either. I make sure that this is a family friendly, safe and welcoming environment for everyone and it has no adverts either (turn off your ad blocker and you'll see) as this is purely a hobby for me as I love talking to people online in this type of environment. :)

Finally, judging by your username, you're really into technology, is that right? We love that too round here, so you'll find plenty of places to talk about it.

I was looking up Discord groups for nerds and dang, what a coincidence! Managed to find this group :P ! How would y’all say this community compares to Discord and Reddit?

Hey there @AllThingsTech , glad to have you here, welcome!

To answer your question: what I personally like about NerdZone is that it literally is a forum, and that's it. No algorithms, no big corpo, no ads. To me it's like mid 2000s internet. Of course there are house rules, but most of them are based on common courtesy. All and all it's pretty cozy here, with a small but friendly community. 🙂

That’s great to hear regarding the ads! I always use Brave Browser on mobile which just happens to use the same ad blocker I use on my laptop :P
