It's quite fascinating and it's nothing like starting your car where you turn the key and it starts in about a second. Instead, this is a long, multistage process that takes a few minutes. This video explains this really well with clear animations and ending with video of an actual jet engine starting up. It doesn't get much nerdier than this.
