Modem routers - security issues

Our modem routers are often hidden away, behind a desk or some other shielded place, sometimes not well ventilated and certainly not good for wifi. One of the ignored, unloved but important IT devices.

Security too is an issue, they are usually four devices rolled into one, a switch, a router, firewall and a wifi access point, produced cheaply and security low for ease of setup.
