I'm getting those irritating voice and text message scams quite frequently now. For the voice ones, it's always a recording of some young woman with a somewhat robotic voice (it's a computer talking, right?) claiming to be from Indeed about a job offer and insisting that I add her number on WhatsApp. I just hang up immediately and report the number as junk. The text ones are similar. It's a shame that these don't give me the opportunity to scam bait and wind them up by talking to an actual scammer over the phone.

I just don't see how people can be so gullible to fall for these clearly ridiculous scam pitches. It's good to see awareness of scams overall being raised in the media and by banks etc when one logs into their sites and receives their messages, but more needs to be done. Whether these OFCOM measures have any teeth remains to be seen.

Ofcom has today announced a “comprehensive package of planned measures” that are designed to improve protection for mobile phone users against messaging scams. According to the regulator, some 50% of UK mobile users said they received a suspicious message between Nov 2024 and Feb 2025 via text or iMessage, but it’s hoped today’s changes may reduce that figure.
