Some random people show up at your door offering to fix things such as your garden, fence etc. These are likely to be scammers, so just turn them away and if you need such services, get them from trusted services.

Also, you may get an invoice out of the blue with your name on it, postal and email addresses which you know for a fact is fraudulent as you've never had any dealings with the company, let alone used the service that they claim on the invoice. You just throw that away and think no more about it. Wrong move: incredibly, they can use a lack of response to take you to court and win! Always refute it in writing, preferably by email as that's your proof that you've done it.

Black Belt Barrister explains these scams in detail and how to avoid getting nailed by them.

That would be a dreadful situation to be in. I throw junk mail away all of the time and never think twice about it. Right now, we are getting a lot of "roofer" traffic since our state has been hit so bad by tornadoes and straight line winds the other day. Dallas, has been declared a disaster from all of the damage. We have to watch for roofers that show up at the front door claiming to be legit after storms. We had our roof repaired today, but with someone we use regularly.

I'll be looking at invoices a little more scrupulously now, thank you!
