@Tiffany , here are some more snow pictures I've taken throughout various days. Enjoy! ☃️

My house looks pretty cute.

Daily bus ride. The snow is much worse now, lol. It has basically doubled since this picture.

View at work from the break room.

@Retro no more beers, just juice. Quite innocent. 😇

Got quite the exercise today. A delivery was coming. Had to remove a bunch of snow at the loading dock, to make the trucker's life a bit easier...

1000024980.webp
And just when I was done, the truck arrived. Perfect timing.

1000024982.webp
Did it all with a snow shovel. A big snow shovel, perhaps. But a snow shovel nonetheless.

Your house is pretty cute, especially with your Christmas lights. Our Christmas lights just came down today. That's a lot of work to clear that snow, omg! Nice breakroom view and enjoyed seeing the road from a view inside your bus. I like that you all drive on the road like the US. That is soooo much snow! Thanks for sharing parts of your world.

Is everyone well since Storm Goretti came through the UK?

Thank you, @Tiffany , I'm glad you find that peek into the other side of the world so interesting. And yes, in continental Europe we drive on the right side of the road, just like in the US! It's only the UK and Ireland that have it the wrong way, as far as Europe goes. (that sentence should trigger @Retro plenty 🤭).

Last night's snowstorm wasn't quite the Goretti (mama miaaa!) but it was still rather noticable.

1000025013.webpIt has caused that I am digging my way out of my house.

1000025014.webp
And my trash bins got knocked over. Gotta clear them out and make a path for the dump truck, because it's trash collection day soon.

1000025016.webp
But while cold it's a lovely sunny day. Uufje is making the best of it by watching me dig out of the window with the heater on maximum inside while sunbathing. Her life is so hard!

Lots of snow er a mashed potatoes. Omg, that is just stunning to see a field of snow and then of course a happy Uffje sunbathing while you're clearing snow. When does snow fall work it's way out of your winter season or does it continue to snow in the spring too?

To give you a better overview: this is what it looked like when looking out of my living room window. This pic is from last weekend.

Bonus:

Some children were sledding down this hill up in the village last week!

When does snow fall work it's way out of your winter season or does it continue to snow in the spring too?

It's sort of a it-comes-and-goes type of deal, for permanent winter snow you'd have to go a bit more up north in Scandinavia. (I live in South Scandinavia). It has gotten a bit warmer this week (sliiiightly above freezing) so the snow is melting, ever so slowly. It's some wet dirty looking slush right now. But in about a week or two all of the thick and chunky mashed potatoes could very well return again. This usually goes off and on until March.

Snow in the spring is rare in Denmark, but not impossible. I've experienced this once well into April, in 2010, when I was briefly living in a suburb of Copenhagen.

You know, I'd never heard of snow referred to as mashed potatoes before - and I love it. :ROFLMAO:

None of that here now though and my trusty iPhone currently reports a balmy 7c.

@Retro I had to convert C to F for 7C. Nice cool temps. We had a cold front come in today with lots of wind. I barely could check the mail outside the wind gusts were so high. Now it's super cold again for tonight.

@Hitcore Thanks for the video bonus. So nice to see kids having fun in the snow. You're home's front view is stellar looking over that field of snow. Thanks for sharing.

@live627 Your mashed potatoes is catching on lol :D

We're expecting a major bad ice/snow storm coming in Friday night and through the weekend. :( I'm not looking forward to it all. Super cold, lots of ice first, and then piles of snow er a mashed potatoes.

Welcome to my world, Tiffs. This has been my entire January so far, probably all of February too. Still, I think this is worse for Texans. In Scandinavia we're used to this sort of thing, it happens literally every winter. Our houses are also built for it, with thick multi layer bricks with lots of insulation in between. The wooden frame houses with minimal insulation that y'all have aren't really suitable for mashed potato weather.
In hope you own some good winter clothing. Best advice I can give you: layer up! And especially keep your hands and feet warm, your fingers and toes will thank you.

You're so right, Texas is not ready for this weather and this winter storm is appearing like it might be the winter storm of the century. I really didn't think a storm could top February of 2021's winter storm Uri when we had zero degree temps and power outages for days over most of the state. We're expecting a lot of ice, which is a really bad thing. It will be coming in sometime late Friday and through the next 24 hours. The forecast had a lot of snow in it for Saturday, but it seems to be changing. I'm in an area full of trees with power lines running through them. These trees usually collapse on the power lines and poof, bye electricity.

Interesting to hear how your world fortifies your homes with such good insulation properties and engineering. We have brick and/or stucco, framing and on the inside just sheetrock with barely there insulation. Most of the homes here are also built with a lot of glass, which is terrible for keeping temperatures under control, since windows leak so bad.

I'll have to wear layers of clothing. I'm just terrified we are going to be losing power and in full survivor mode all weekend. My dh and I were talking yesterday and he said what I was thinking that it's a shame we can't enjoy the snow like we used too, because now all we can think of is are we going to be without power for days and just trying to cope. Most Texans since the storm Uri, have PTSD because we all suffered in the cold, plus keeping up with our animals to make sure they were staying warm was a challenge too.

storm Uri

Oh yeah I remember that. I think I posted about The 8-bit Guy because of that, as he showcased an emergency solar power system because of that. Let's see if I can find it.

[using search function]

Ah yes, there it is

Speaking of which, you might wanna check out these videos by The 8-bit Guy, a YouTuber I follow (awesome channel!). He lives somewhere in the DFW area and he has experienced the harsh winter you speak of. After that he went full nerdmode on installing solar panels plus batteries in his house in order to have at least some extent of heating if needed. Then he did some testing, simulating how much backup-juice he would get in practice in case the power grid would go out again for a certain amount of time.

Have you looked into getting some backup power?

It's kind of stormy here today. My trash bins keep tipping over all the time! I just came home finding dozens of empty cat food cans all over my driveway. 🙈
I should look into chaining up those things.

Thank you @Hitcore for the videos to watch. I'm looking forward to looking at them when I have more time, especially since the 8-bit Guy is from the DFW area. It sounds really windy where you live. I hope you don't have much of a storm coming through.

Back up power is a complicated issue at my house. We just talked about it again and maybe we will have to break down and do it for next year.

I don't see these weird harsh winter storms ending anytime soon. Uri occurred during a triple-dip La Nina. We are supposed to be in a Enso neutral phase at the moment, yet we are getting this icemaggeddon powerful ice storm of the century. Weather is just amazing!

The winter storm is coming in now. If for some reason you all don't hear from me for awhile, possibly through Monday, (not cueing drama here sorry) but I hope not, that means we've lost power and in survival mode. We have this storm coming in tonight and then another phase coming in tomorrow afternoon sometime that will bring in a wintry mix on top of the ice. I will check in if I can though.

It is. One of the windiest parts of the continent in fact. That's why this area is littered with wind turbines. An upside of this is that the electricity here is relatively cheap.

Crossing my fingers 🤞 for you, hoping that the storm won't affect your power grid too much and that you don't fully have to go in survival mode. I also hope you have enough food and water in the house, a must-have for situations like these.

The most important thing is your safety. And comfort your little doggy as much as you can! 🐶

I hope that doesn't come to pass, it's so unpleasant when it happens.

I stumbled upon this map..

1000025205.webp

All of Denmark is just 0 degrees (Celsius). Then I looked at my weather app..

1000025207.webp

It checks out. Being around the 0 degrees mark with quite the stability for a period of time. This is good. Don't get me wrong, 0 degrees (freezing point) definitely is chilly, so warm clothes are still a must, but it's nothing extreme. This weather is in fact quite boring. But boring is good. I can ride the scooter in this. 🛵

As a reminder, it was this not too long ago

1000025209.webp

Walking in the very early morning at -17°C (1°F) was no joke. So in comparison 0°C feels pretty mild.

@Retro it looks like it's about 8°C where you live. Not bad.

But then there is America...

1000025210.webp

(I live in the part of Arizona where it says 11)

So like 52°F then. Certainly pretty good compared to most of your country at the moment.

I traversed through Arizona once, a long time ago. It was summer, and it was hot I remember. The route went through Tucson and Yuma. The deserts were amazing, with all the giant cacti and the weirdly shaped rocks. I pictured Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote in such landscapes, lol.

Checking in really quick...so far we're making it. Thank you for all of your good wishes. It's very, very cold....so much ice, sleet and a little snow. It's just a solid sheet of thick ice. There's no walking or driving on it. My dogs are very unhappy going outside. We have to get through tomorrow as the precipitation has left us, but the temps are dropping even more. Have a good day, all!! :)
