That one must upgrade to Windows 11 before 14.10.2025 is well documented, but here, Dave the ex Microsoft engineer, explains it in his own straight-talking no-nonsense style in this short video. Check it out.

For those tldr readers, one must upgrade because security updates stop coming after that date, so it will be an open door for hackers, plus later versions of software will start giving warnings and errors and eventually stop working at all over time. Not a good place to be.

Haha yeah. But no worries. Just wanted to see your reaction to this. I may be stuck in the past when it comes to tech, but that doesn't mean I'm not tech savvy. I know full well what the security risks are, that's why my Windows 7 machine isn't connected to the internet. I use this thing just to create my videos (and to play some old games). Then, with some USB swapping, I upload my things on another machine. I do all my internet stuff on Linux Mint. 🤓

You use flash drives? I used FTP to directly send files from my main running Windows 10 to a 20 year old system running Windows 98 via ethernet cable (I think it was cat5, not even cat5e).

Crikey, why so old? You'd get some performance improvements and greater stability with a more modern system, at least.

By the sound of it, that system isn't connected to the internet, so security isn't a problem.

It's not always about having the most modern thing available. Running older OS'es is a firm choice. Be it for nostalgic reasons, or legacy software. The latter can be run through a virtual machine of course, but it just isn't the same.
I'd love to have a proper Windows 98 system with time appropriate hardware actually.

Old games that are largely forgotten. I definitely don't want to use something that will send a kernel panic at the drop of a hat anymore. I've dealt with more than enough blue screens and even stack overflows in days yonder—although a stack overflow was at the application level, and only that app would need to terminate.
