I've not heard of this and think it would be great if it was actually made into a commercial product that one could buy.

I remember playing around with Asteroids on the full size one around 30 years ago in a second hand computer shop and thinking it was really cool how the electron beam in the CRT followed the outlines of the graphics rather than a raster scan. Animation was super smooth too with no jaggies and the rest of the phosphor completely unlit. The lines had that electric blue look that B&W CRT's had, too. I really loved it. It's literally impossible to create this with a modern LCD display, has to be a CRT, so I wonder if this new prototype actually has a CRT, or just pretends to do this with an LCD display, which won't look anywhere near as good.

At that time, it was going for only £50 and I was tempted to buy it, but didn't. When I changed my mind a couple of weeks later and had another look, the price had jumped to £150, so unfortunately I never bought it.

trouble is - sounds like its lcd based - and that pretty much defeats the object.

as apparently it uses an SD - its sounding more like "yet another thec64/thewhatever type raspberrypi type emulator in a box" :(

Yeah, it does defeat it. I can understand why though as no one makes CRT's anymore, so creating a whole factory just to make a niche product that few will buy is a non-starter.

There's a firm called Thompson that makes them for industrial purposes - apparently. But getting them at a more friendly price would be an issue. Perhaps it's possible to recreate some of the effect of one artificially?
