Sometimes I think movies like these should be required viewing for anyone going on holiday anywhere, even today... Whatever the country, a little bit of inside knowledge on specific elements of culture one might want to directly interact with can be invaluable... And they'd make good in-flight movies, as well!

Burgess Meredith makes for a uniquely charismatic mentor - calm, patient, understated - but I kind of get the impression these instructional films weren't that effective, given the reputation Americans had at the time.

This was done in 1943 and it’s a different world, barely recognisable 80 odd years on.

I liked the bit with the obnoxious GI and how he disappeared in a puff of smoke lol.
