Wow, I remember those text adventures from the early 80s. I was never into them, but I did start to play one on my Acorn Electron at the time, circa 1983 and it did engage me for a while. I can't remember what it was called, but I never finished it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's since been made available in a similar way to Zork.
I found the games of the time pretty rubbish, even the action ones since they looked so primitve due to the low specs of the computers available then. I didn't need a comparison with anything more advanced to be able to tell, either. I wasn't interested* in computer games other than to see what was there until the late 90s when processing power had increased significantly and graphics cards had become available that actually made 3D games possible, look good and play well. Half-Life and Unreal Tournament 1999 were the first shooters that I got into and boy were they good! UT was better than the original HL, but it's a draw with HL2 which I've played all the way through at least three times over across the years. The advantage UT has is that it's got this arene mode with no story, so one can just play it endlessly against bots or online with humans. There was an online version of HL2 as well, but it wasn't as good and I don't think one could play against bots.
Finally, check out this video review thread of graphics card evolution over a decade that I posted back in July 2021. How time flies, that's 4 years ago now, so even that video is out of date now.
NVIDIA has been consistently better (and sure charged for it). I’ve got the GTX 580, which was a total beast in its day. Now however, it’s hopelessly out of date and underpowered. Fascinating to see these things slide into obsolescence. My current card is the MSI RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming X Trio...

*As I write this, I remember that I did play a small handful of them: a side scroller called Imogen with some very clever puzzles, Starship Command and Asteroids. All these were played on my Electron or later the BBC Master 128. Elite, which everyone raved about, didn't do anything for me. I remember the Sega console around the 2000 era had impressive graphics that still look quite good today as the quality of at least some the games was very good and they had smooth 50Hz motion rather than the jerkfest of most other computers that I disliked so much.
