This UK driving instructor has lots of interesting videos on driving cars and driving situations. This one about a really steep road is especially interesting.

I went up a steep road recently and I can attest to the strain on the transmission. Car could only do it slowly in first gear and it clearly felt and sounded like it was straining. Also, there was a shear drop on one side. Won't be going up that road again.

Where on Earth was that @Retro ? That sounds interesting.

Transmissions are very sturdy items despite my previous comment. When I was instructing learners many years back one student accidentally selected reverse without pressing the clutch. Big lurch, bang and stall. Anyway, car survived, at next oil change there is a magnetic drain plug in the car sump, when I removed it there was a broken cog tooth attached to magnet. Obviously from the reverse gear.

Gearbox still worked fine.

Was it the reverse gear that was broken then? If it was a common gear to all the ratios or one of the ratios, then I reckon it would constantly bump as it drove and be undriveable.
