I'm sure I created a thread on this ages ago? Oh nvm, we'll blab here, lol.

This forum was originally meant to be the home of a retro computer club, ie 1970s to 2000s PCs and consoles, hence you see those sections on the home page and my Retro username. When it changed direction, I extensively reorganised it and the name just stuck as it's a great username, nice, short and pretty cool, too.

My avatar is the branding for the original 1987 Acorn Archimedes, an absolute beast of a machine at the time. With its revolutionary ARM RISC CPU, the speed knocked the spots off the 386s of the time, simply no comparison, and I really wanted one, but they were very expensive, in the thousands. You can imagine how expensive that was back then and quite unaffordable.

This is the original Acorn A310. Check out the iconic A logo on the monitor, my avatar. That's a real picture too, not superimposed. Beats me how they hid the power cable though as they didn't have Photoshop like they do now to erase it. Answers on a postcard to the usual address.

Well, since you asked in the other thread, and made this one lol, you could say my parents chose it. My initials. :P It works for me since I'm all about computers and such.
Is DATA really the initials of your name? What a coincidence :P Or were you being sarcastic there, sorry data, I’m digging you up aren’t I? 😆

Hitcore is an hommage to Hithouse, who was a pioneer in the acidhouse genre in the 80s. I always felt connected to it, even as a kid. More about that in this thread:

Thanks! This avatar is only for June, though. It's pride month, and within the smiley is a pride flag. I identify as Dutch. 🇳🇱😅 My pronouns are hij/hem. Please use them accordingly! 😁
On the first of July I will revert to my normal, yellow 80s smiley.

I didn’t notice that :P
Love it 😍
Do you go to Pride? So I’m considering going to Pride just to explore and diversify - does Pride have drag shows and food stalls? On websites I saw they do although a friend doesn’t remember seeing one… could be the crowd though :P

The Dutch pride flag thing is just my sense of humor. It's kind of a meme where I'm from.
I'm considering starting a thread in the funnies section some day, where I will be showing and explaining Dutch memes. Because you can translate a meme, but without context it doesn't really make a lot of sense to the anglophone, I suppose. 😉

I suppose the funny part in such jokes and some dad jokes are that aha moment you realise you missed the obvious :P

It's kind of like that, yes.
At the same time I do also enjoy memes from other countries. They're all different, and it allows to look deeper into a country's culture. Humor is a very good gateway for that. That's my idea of celebrating diversity.

Come to think of it, I sort of do that already in my music videos. Quartet of Legends, uploaded only yesterday, is a good example of this practice, where I'm experimenting with the idea of multilingual tracks. Have you seen it?

@Hitcore you speak much better English than many English people, flawlessly, in fact. Reading your posts, I couldn't tell that English is your second language if you hadn't told us. Your standard of English really embarrasses the locals who should be more literate, lol.

That is one of the nicest compliments a person can give me, I take pride in maintaining high levels of proficiency, regardless of what language I speak. Thank you, @Retro . 🫶

That being said, I must note that knowledge of the English language among Dutchies is extremely common, so in that regard I'm not exceptional. Typically we score the highest in Europe, outside of the countries with English as the primary language.

We do have horrible accents, though.

You're very welcome, it's much appreciated. :) Yeah, I was aware of how well the Dutch speak English and I've seen it proved many times over, now. Isn't it a mandatory subject in school?

Oh, I love hearing English spoken with funny accents! I love how the Germans are parodied as saying "you Englishes". Really cracks me up.

Just check out Sabine's YouTube channel and hear how she speaks English with her strong German accent. It cracks me up a bit how she tends to get the pronounciations a bit wrong, some hilariously so and actually makes the videos more watchable. Don't let that fool you, however. She's really bright, a qualified physicist who really knows what she's talking about.
