Is VR a platform yet?

I've noticed that VR above all else gets a bigger response from everyone so I'm delving into that.

The reason I ask is because I would honestly like to see VR do well in spite of the various organisations that muscle in on it. At the moment VR is unquestionably a niche-at-best platform, but outside of indie the only games released at the moment are old titles like AC. As a platform does it have any staying impact?

My take:
VR is a marvel, seen as a gimmick like the Wii and revolutionary at least in theory. There's not a lot of good examples of VR yet, though with proximity chat it might take off. There's a lot of good ideas though the prime problem with it is a lack of infrastructure for both players and developers.
