Not so good when the cold sets in early, here in UK although we are less that three weeks away from Winter Solstice we tend to get our worst weather in the latter part of the winter, January and February. Breathe a sigh of relief when March starts but few years back I recall below freezing temperatures and snow into mid March.

No heavy storms here, but enough to dislodge an old rickety fence; never mind, had to be replaced anyway.
".....below freezing temperatures and snow into mid March?" ok with me. (I know, I am in a minority of 1here🐧)

just got a text alert from our electricity provider: they are on yellow alert. Warning of winds 50 mph or more.
A nice quiet weekend.....

During the big freeze, we were one of the few houses on the street that actually had an ice/snow free roof. As for propane use... learned years ago with our first RV if you have exterior tanks in the winter it helps to have a heat wrap for them to get decent gas generation. So we have had 2 as long as we've owned an this RV (2019 model).
I'm sure you were the envy of your neighborhood. We have a few homes that have added generators since the BIG freeze of 2021. One of the homes, owned by a plumber, had the foresight to add a generator when it was built several years ago. His house always stands out with lighting no matter what kind of bad weather we have. We do have a propane heater to use if needed, but it hardly does the job in our house. We would install a generator but our house is poorly designed and we don't plan on staying here for retirement. So we freeze lol.🥶
Totally with you there, Tiffany. I love the rain as well. As a kid i'd have my red rain poncho with white dots, when I wore it I looked like a mushroom🍄.
I'd go out in the rain no umbrella all wrapped up in my hooded mushroom poncho, walk into nearby fields looking for tadpoles in the puddles.
....And then, after the rains, the sun would come out and there would be that unmistakable scent in the air, the scent of rain-soaked earth, happy earth, replete with water. Like the earth was sighing with relief after being parched for days on end.

Tiffany, I do hope that Ercot is wrong and their prediction for a winter like 2021 will not come true.

Love your childhood story!! I was a puddle-jumper. I had a pink raincoat with flowers, very 70ish, and a matching hat. My mom forgot the rain boots, but that didn't bother me....though I did get scolded a bit when I walked home from school since I was soaked and didn't miss any running water to jump in. Now a days, kids don't experience walking home like that because it's a new world, plus kids are too pampered lol.

Hope Ercot is wrong too. I track our weather pretty closely and to me, our weather pattern is more like 2015. It's been too warm and dry and December became the transitional month for winter instead of November in 2015. North Texas had a severe weather outbreak that I'll never forget. This was a terrifying storm system with unbelievable damage. Here's a little reading if you are interested.

We have rain expected this weekend, yay! I hope everyone stays warm and cozy!

I'm catching up and reading about your storm Darragh! Is everyone doing okay? Fifty to ninety mile an hour wind gusts are terrifying!

Park close to me I walked round day after and there was no obvious indication of the storm, very little debris, no fallen trees, surprisingly many houses back on to the park and no fences were down apart from one that was in a poor state before the storm.

Guess lucky it is December and leaves off all the deciduous trees, that reduces chance of damage.

It was however, by UK standards, a bad storm, two died due to falling trees.

Another grey day in NW London today, saw a wee bit of blue sky yesterday but back to normal today. It is depressing, my Nan used to blame the weather on the sputnicks, but then Climate Change wasn't a thing back then

Sorry to hear that two people died in your storm. I just hate to hear that sad news from any storm. Storm damage can be fixed, but lost lives are such a tragedy.

I'm so glad to hear your close neighborhood park did okay through the storm. Sorry there were fences down though. Fences down can be a challenge when people have pets.

I never really thought about the leaves taking some weight off of trees in the winter, hence helping to give them some edge on potential storm damage. Our leaves are still falling this year. It's been such a warm fall. My back property is covered with oak tree leaves and I'm having heck with keeping the leaves out of the pool.

Are most of your days in London throughout the winter usually cloudy? I hope you get some sun to brighten your day soon. I'll virtually send some sun over across the pond. ☀️ I had a Nana too. She had funny weather sayings like, "if the cows are laying down it's going to rain". :D

The cows and rain is one I heard of too, makes sense, they'll lay down on a dry bit.

We have been getting a lot of grey days of late, island nation so changeable weather the norm. A consolation of cloud is it acts like a blanket and keeps the temperature up a wee bit. Blue skies in Winter equals cold.

Interesting that when your weather is clear that reflects colder weather and the clouds do not act like insulators keeping your temperature up a bit.

In the spring, summer and fall days in Texas, when it's clear, it's usually warmer unless a cold front by some miracle came through, like today. We had a little rain that preceded a cold front and it's been pretty cold and windy today.

I didn't even process the fact that cows like to sit on dry grass and how the rain affects them. Well, I guess my Nana had a little bit of farm animal knowledge after all.

Here it is Christmas Eve and we have a tornado warning to the southeast of us (about 48 miles away). We have a cold front blowing through and it apparently is really enjoying this exceedingly warm December weather we are having.
Speaking of warm... was out mulching the leaves and noticed that the dandelions are blooming as well as some other wild flowers.

I hope your area is okay after a tornado warning. It doesn't take long for warm weather to sprout creatures and dandelions. We've had bad weather all day too. It started storming about 9am and didn't really work itself out until after 4pm today. We had numerous lightening strikes, thunder and a substantial amount of heavy rain at times. I heard that the DFW airport grounded flights this morning until about 11am because of this incoming cold front and too much lightening. I told my mom today that with exception of one ingredient to this weather, which would have been a severe drop in temperature from maybe about 80F to 30F in a quick amount of time, today's weather threat was much like the North Texas Tornado outbreak of December 26, 2015, which ravaged a good portion of Garland, and Rowlett, with a very damaging EF4 tornado.

Weather wasn't too bad here on this Christmas Day and certainly nowhere near to snowing.

Today was another stormy day like Monday. DFW Airport grounded flights for several hours again. I just went outside thinking our stormy weather was over only to find out we have a light rain back. I did read there were three tornadoes spotted in El Campo, Texas, about 3pm, as @Astro What illustrated in the radar. I'm not sure of the size or outcome of these tornadoes? El Campo is west of Houston.

I'm glad you all across the pond had some cool weather but not too cold and enjoyed it in your own way.

New Year's is around the corner and I was looking at the predictions for temps for the next three months in the US. Temps look above average warm just about everywhere except near Canada on the far NE and NE.

It's currently minus 2 outside, but my home is well insulated and warm. However, I do think of the millions of wild animals who have to struggle through such conditions and worse. Wish I could help them.

Temperatures have dropped as colder arctic air spreads across the UK, with amber cold weather health alerts in place ahead of a weekend of snow forecast for much of the country.

Met Office yellow warnings for snow and ice have been issued for much of England and Wales and parts of Scotland over the course of three days, with cold conditions forecast to continue into Monday.

Separate warnings for ice are in force on Thursday and Friday after much of the UK was lashed by strong winds and heavy rain, which led to widespread flooding across the north-west of England.

Watched a documentary on TV recently of the Winter of 1947 in UK. How those people coped I do not know, no central heating, no double glazing, few carpets. Around 6 weeks of below freezing temperatures, huge snow drifts, February had something like 20 days of snow. When the thaw set in there was extensive flooding and saturated homes after the freeze. Few weeks later UK hit by storm with winds in places up to 100mph. All this 2 years after the war ended.

Apparently they later, same year, had one of the best summers on record.

@Geffers that is substantial severe weather history in the UK of 1947. Thanks for sharing because I didn't know if the UK had any history of severe cold weather. I assumed Scotland and Northern Ireland would have some severe cold weather but learning the UK had that tragic winter puts a new light on the potential for severe winters in the UK.

@Retro as I was reading your weather article I was wondering if the UK had to be concerned with power loss and my question was answered in your article.
Flurries of snow and freezing rain could result in power cuts, travel disruption and some rural communities being cut off in the coming days, the Met Office warned.

I hope you all stay safe and warm with this Arctic blast coming your way and there won't be any power cuts.

Our north eastern states are also expecting this same Arctic blast with blizzards expected. On the southern US map, we are expecting severely cold weather but not any storms. We hope to not have any power loss.

Oh yes, with climate change, our extreme weather is often a smaller version of yours, unfortunately. Stay safe. ❤️

Just come back from visiting a friend and the temperature is showing around zero on the iPhone and car, although I didn't experience any frost or unusual conditions, thankfully. Felt cold enough outside the car in both locations though. Tomorrow might be a different matter.
