The 3.5mm plug is everywhere, but there's lots of different types, leading to compatibility problems. This article explains them all and what it calls the "misconnection epidemic".

There are at least four different varieties of 3.5 mm plugs and jacks, each with its own purpose and application. In the last 60 days, several friends have had severe problems by not understanding the differences and innocently plugged the inappropriate plug into the jack on their recording device, which caused them severe problems. I helped another figure out to use a headphone+mic 2 separate cables from it, both plugs were trs, so got adapter to go to TRRS so that 1 cable could be used then another adapter to go from TRRS back to TRS for the PC.
